 General Information

Zoo Peru Inc. is a charitable, non-profit organization with offices in Auburn, California, Perth, Australia and Iquitos, Peru. One of our goals is to improve the conditions for the animals at the Quistococha Zoo in Iquitos, Peru. It is our desire to create a premier zoological facility and sanctuary dedicated to the preservation of the ecostructure contained within the Peruvian rainforest, an oasis where flora and fauna indigenous to the rainforest can thrive and flourish, undisturbed by visitors.

The current President and Regional Government of Loreto is working closely with Zoo Peru officials and staff, to make the Quistococha Zoo one of the best zoos within the Americas.

With the committed support and union of the government of Loreto, and the administration of Quistococha, the necessary groundwork has been laid to achieve the goals and objectives set forth by this unique partnership.

Location

Small MapQuistococha is located just outside Iquitos, in the departmental region of Loreto. This area is one of the world's most diverse and complex ecosystems and has the potential, with the achievement of our goals and objectives, to be recognized as one of the most powerful conservational and educational environmental classrooms the earth has to offer.

Quistococha Zoo Inhabitants

The Quistococha Zoo currently houses more than seventy species of animals exclusively indigenous to the rainforest of northern Peru. Unfortunately, most of the residents of the zoo arrive by way of confiscations from poachers. These confiscations are made by either the environmental police or the staff of Quistococha.

Environment

The Quistococha Zoo is located on over 900 acres of secondary rainforest. These majestic grounds also incorporate a 125 acre spring fed natural lake which is now known to have fish species within it which are found no where else in the world.

It is our intent to demonstrate internationally, a model zoological facility which demonstrates a new era of consciousness and conservation commitment to our environment. This will be achieved on multiple levels, one of which includes the housing the indigenous fauna to the region which is unable to be released back to the jungle into rainforest emersion exhibits.
